Take a look in the mirror. If you are lucky, you’ll see even-toned, soft skin and I ENVY YOU! However, if you are like me you’ll see some acne scars from late-night teenage pimple pop sessions, spots around your mouth since Mother Nature decided to kick your butt and probably some wrinkles that make you feel old at twenty. Then you probably get the urge to run to Boots and spend a little fortune on overpriced skin care products that promise to banish your blemishes in seconds- but even make your skin look worse. If this is the case- don’t worry no more, I got you!
Ever since 5th grade I had to deal with super troublesome skin. Just like you I tried out almost every “anti-acne” skin care product that’s out there, always ending up disappointed.
But one day on my train to University I stumbled across a blogger on Pinterest, who made its own skin care. At first I thought this was a joke. But then it struck me- If you can eat it, it can’t harm your skin, right?
I did some research online, pinned some recipes and stalked some of those DIY skin care bloggers. Then I got to the fun part. I mixed, cut, boiled, scented and reheated stuff I had stashed somewhere in my kitchen that apparently did amazeball things to your skin. Even if I doubted that it worked it for sure was a ton of fun!
Now we get to the best part: Within a MONTH I got rid of my cystic acne, lightened my acne scars and overall felt more comfortable in my skin- without spending a rather big amount of money. I am aware that this sounds very cocky and like those dubious >>90 year old woman looks like 20<< internet ads. But it really worked miracles for me.
How did I do it and how can you too?
• Throw away those make-up wipes.
I had used them forever and never really thought that they caused my skin to break out. Nowadays I use Oil to cleanse my face. I know- this sounds super controversial! But if you wash your face with harsh chemicals, you’ll get rid of all the crucial oils your skin needs to stay healthy which causes your skin to produce even more oil which then clogs your pores. Natural oils like coconut oil or my personal favourite- Grape Seed Oil- dissolve the excess oil without drying it out. I just take a washcloth soaked in rather hot water to open my pores and remove all the nasty stuff and end up with clean, make-up free skin! Needless to say you need to remove your make-up every day! I can’t stress this one enough!
• Get rid of store-bought face masks and make your own!
Not only are these so much fun to make- they also work so much better. That cucumber face mask you bought at Boots has probably never seen a real cucumber and exists of nasty chemicals you can’t even pronounce.
My favourite one is mixing 1 tbsp. raw honey with 1 tsp. cinnamon. This combination soothes your skin and is anti-bacterial!
• Apple Cider Vinegar and Lemon
I’ve only recently discovered this gem. I do have to admit- it does smell super gross- but it works amazing as a natural toner! Mixed with a freshly squeezed lemon you can lighten your acne scars at home- just make sure you use sunscreen if you go out since lemon makes your skin a tad more sensitive to the sun!
Other things that are really important:
• Change your pillow case every week.
• Don’t touch your face! You’ll transmit bacteria that cause acne!
• Wash your make-up brushes at least once a week.
• Drink as much water as possible, make sure you eat loads of Vitamin C- rich foods and turn up the zinc- it helps generate collagen for skin-tissue repair.
• Cut out the junk! You might love yourself some McDonald’s- but don’t you love your skin more?
Hopefully, these factors will help you just as much as they helped me! I’d definitely encourage you to at least try it out and give your skin some time to get used to the new skin care products.
